Doctor in Distress

Ah the 80s. A time when the success of Band Aid had made charity singles a part of everyday life. Remember Ferry Aid? And of course Band Aid 2...

Oh, yes and this abomination - Doctor in Distress, released when Doctor Who was put on hiatus for 18 months. Did they really think this would make BBC execs change their mind?

Dr. Who goes groovy

And so the Daleks return to TV tonight as the second series of Doctor Who comes to an end. In celebration I've dug out Eric Winstone's wonderfully rubbish version of the Dr. Who theme.

I had this on a LP when I was a kid, bizarrely partnered by the Rupert The Bear theme, Pink Panther and an odd PlaySchool / Magic Roundabout MegaMix. In the late 70s / early 80s I must have worn out the grooves on this record and let the weird, strangulated chords of Mr Winstone's arrangement transport me to weird and wonderful planets.

OK, so it's a bit on the crappy side but as a bit of groovy nostalgia, it can't be beat.

So sit back, imagine the crackle of the vinyl and enjoy!

The Doctor's new girl

OK, I'm back after a long time away with a nerd alert.

So, Doctor Who has a new companion. The rather lovely Freema Agyeman will appear from season 3. The papers, such as the Mail, are of course loving the news that she's the Doctor's first black companion. Great journalism Mr Mail Hack. Have you forgotten Mickey Smith, the black companion from, er, 2006. How soon we forget.

She won't be in the Christmas special though, although RTD has promised a 'surprise'. So what do we think? Sarah Jane Smith again? Or perhaps its time to wheel out the Brigadier? Or will it be someone completely new?

Isn't it fantastic being an excited kid again?

PS. I'm backing the Daleks in the Dalek/Cybermen war...
