Doctor Who: New Earth / Tooth and Claw

The events of the last couple of weeks have meant that I haven't commented on the other event of the last couple of weeks, the return of Doctor Who. So what did we think of the first two episodes here in the Scott household. Well, Chloe cried through the first quarter of an hour of New Earth so I think that's her critique covered. Personally I didn't mind New Earth - I thought it was a little lightweight for a season opener but it was silly and camp and therefore utterly Doctor Who. But, one week on and we have Tooth and Claw.
Take Doctor Who, add a healthy dose of Hammer, a sprinkling of Kung Fu movies, some rather good Werewolf CGI and you have a fantastic episode. OK I'd rather it didn't have to do the Doctor Who thing and explain away the magic of the werewolf (sometimes it would be good if a supernatural monster stayed a supernatural monster rather than being an alien trapped on earth) but that is a little whinge.
People have also been moaning about the Doctor and Rose's 'giggling school-kids' persona, making them both smug and unappealling. I don't really care. They're having fun and besides they were like this in the last series (witness the high-fives and full-of-themselves carry-on when Mickey reaches the TARDIS in Boom Town). Plus RTD says it's all part of a master plan, so we'll have to wait and see.
Anyway, personally I'm more excited that next week (and excuse me for this) K9 IS BACK!!!!!! Woo-and indeed-hoo!

  • I can't wait to see him on Saturday. For my birthday my better half got me a cracking K9 action figure all rusty and beaten up.

    Fantastic!
