Holy Disappointment Batman

Just got back from seeing Batman Begins with my good lady wife...

Ah well. Never mind.

It takes a lot for me to be non-plussed about a Batman movie but somehow Batman Begins managed it.

The main problem is that I just didn't care. I went to see Batman and he didn't turn up for an hour.

And yes, I know that's the point. This is the movie that explains why Bruce Wayne became Batman. So what? We know. His parents were killed, he vows to fight crime, he gets some wonderful toys and puts on a bat suit.

Yup. Seen that all before thank you very much.

What I want to see is Batman.

By the time he turns up in this I've already given up caring. I know the Batmobile is a cool car. I don't need to see him test-driving it. I know the Batcave should be full of wonderful technology and Wayne Manor a secure fortress. I don't need to see it being constructed. I know he's head of Wayne Industries. I don't need to see how it happened.

What I need to see in a Bat-movie is Batman being Batman.

While Bale is fine in the duel-role and Gary Oldman thankfully playing a likable Commissioner Gordon I felt that this was just a two-hour pre-title for a real Batman adventure, and one I could have skipped happily to get to the main event. I think I was supposed to like it just because it's a Batman film but unfortunately there was nothing here we haven't seen before.

Why can't hollywood be brave enough to launch a franchise without rehashing a origin story. Most people know who Batman is. If they really want to know how he became that way then they can rent Batman, or Batman Forever or the cartoon series or... the list is endless.

Roll on the sequel. Maybe then we can finally see a Dark Night Detective we actually care about.
